How to Approach a Kitchen and Bathroom Remodeling Project

Are your kitchen and bathroom outdated? Do these rooms fail to reflect your personal style? It may be time for a remodel. Maybe you are looking to replace your cabinet or sink or are just looking to add some more modern accents. Sometimes the hardest part is getting started.

The first step is to devise a plan. Have an idea of what you want your kitchen & bathroom remodeling to entail. Do you want to improve the overall look? Do you want a more functional layout? Do you need more storage space? These are important questions to consider. When you hit the showroom, it can get a bit overwhelming with all the choices available. Projects can get out of control fast. Knowing your objectives can help you make informed decisions.

Consider making a checklist. Creating a list can help you think through your projects and all of your priorities. This will give you an idea of what design styles you are drawn to and what storage solutions you may need. The purpose of your kitchen & bathroom remodeling can easily be derailed by all the decisions you need to make.

Set a budget, and stick to it. This is just as important, if not more so, than designing your vision. Have an idea what you plan to spend on various items along with an overall spending limit. Typically, cabinets account for about 40 percent, labor accounts for about 25 percent and countertops account for about 12 percent of your budget. Lighting, electrical work and appliances may also make up a portion of your costs.

After you have done some planning and set a financial plan, it is time to start shopping. Consider all the elements together. Do they serve the purpose they are intended to serve? Do they suit your vision? If you are visiting a showroom, bring along pictures of curtains, flooring and wall colors so you aren’t having to guess.

Kitchen & bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be a stressful endeavor. Make a plan and don’t stray from it unless you have a really good reason.
